Ministry in an Evolving World – A Roadmap to Forming Missionary Disciples: Listen. Teach. Send.
The landscape of higher education is changing rapidly, and campus ministry must evolve with it. From the rise of AI and shifting cultural norms to tighter budgets, increased mental health needs, and deep questions around identity, meaning, and belonging, today’s students are facing a world unlike any before.
In this new reality, campus ministers must be rooted in the Gospel, responsive to emerging needs, and ready to lead with clarity, creativity, and compassion.
Over forty years ago, the U.S. bishops issued Empowered by the Spirit, the foundational pastoral letter on campus ministry. Its vision - to form faith communities, educate for justice, nurture conscience, and develop leaders - remains the bedrock of Catholic ministry in higher education. Last year, we celebrated this landmark document and its enduring wisdom.
At CALLED26, we now turn to the U.S. bishops’ newest framework, Listen, Teach, Send. More than a method, it is a contemplative and missionary mindset, one that begins with deep listening, leads to transformative teaching, and culminates in sending young adults out as courageous disciples who can meet the world’s challenges with Gospel hope. Through the lens of Empowered by the Spirit, we will unpack Listen, Teach, Send and explore how to minister faithfully in a time of rapid change, forming students who are not only resilient in their faith but also ready to transform the world.
Together at CALLED26, we will discern how to minister faithfully in this time of rapid change, forming students who are not only resilient in their faith but also prepared to transform the world with the hope of the Gospel.
